The Maltings, Alnwick - Shortlisted
THE SUCCESSFUL CONVERSION OF THE FORMER ALNWICK BREWERY SITE HAS BEEN RECOGNISED BY THE ROYAL INSTITUTE OF SURVEYORS (RICS) WITH A SHORTLISTING IN TWO CATEGORIES IN THE ORGANISATION’S FORTHCOMING ANNUAL RENAISSANCE AWARDS.
Following a long period of neglect and dereliction, the remnants of the site, which included the Grade II listed Bolams Mill and Kiln House have now been converted along with a new build extension into 37 unique one and two-bedroom apartments known as The Maltings.
Prior to being rescued by Northumberland-based house builder, Ascent Homes, the buildings were in danger of being added to the Buildings at Risk Register and lost forever.
Following a multi-million-pound facelift the buildings, which are in keeping with the historic fabric of Alnwick, have not only been saved for future generations, they have also created much needed high quality new housing in the centre of the town.
RICS Renaissance Awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure as well as considering their impact on local communities.
The Maltings has been shortlisted in both the Conservation and Residential categories. All construction and conservation work has been carried out by Ascent Homes’ in-house construction team.
Speaking about the awards, Ascent Homes development director, Duncan Bowman, said:
“I’m absolutely thrilled that The Maltings has been shortlisted in such prestigious awards. When we took the buildings on they were in such a state of disrepair that that we knew we had a mammoth task on our hands, not only to save them but to convert them sensitively, to ensure they wouldn’t lose their character.
“We also had to create apartments that people wanted to live in. I believe we have more than achieved that especially given the feedback we have received to date from the first set of residents to move into the building and the high level of interest we continue to experience from buyers for the few remaining properties.
“The development has not been without its challenges, but it has been rewarding. From an economic perspective it has allowed Ascent Homes to create much need construction jobs and provide training opportunities for apprentices, all of whom will move on to our other sites around the county.”
The RICS Renaissance Awards are due to take place on Friday April 20th. It is hoped The Maltings will be among the winners.
