Public invited to see innovative new homes on the Quay

THE PUBLIC WILL GET A CHANCE TO SEE AND COMMENT ON PLANS FOR THE LATEST INNOVATIVE STAGE IN THE COMMISSIONER’S QUAY DEVELOPMENT IN BLYTH WHEN PLANS FOR 52 SUSTAINABLE, LOW-ENERGY HOMES GO ON DISPLAY ON WEDNESDAY 25TH FEBRUARY, FROM 1-7PM AT BLYTH WORKSPACE, COMMISSIONERS QUAY, QUAY ROAD, BLYTH, NORTHUMBERLAND NE24 3AF.

The proposals, which follow the completed Blyth Workspace building and the planned Inn development on adjacent plots, will add the residential component to this integrated, mixed-use scheme which is giving new life to Blyth’s waterfront. The two-, three- and four-bedroom houses, which will be constructed by Arch, The Northumberland Development Company, for open-market sale, will be built using an innovative, sustainable timber panel construction system which is rapid to construct and provides very high levels of thermal insulation which will radically cut residents’ energy bills.

The scheme has been designed as a series of short terraces giving every dwelling a view of the Quayside and many a direct sea view, with many properties benefiting from roof terraces to maximise their aspect. Tall windows and simple, repeating brick façades echo the character of the adjacent conversation area, and the roofline of some of the terraces harks back to the site’s industrial past.

Cllr Dave Ledger, Arch Chair and Deputy Leader of Northumberland County Council said “Commissioners Quay is a flagship regeneration scheme for the whole of Northumberland and it’s important that this residential element, which largely completes the picture, maintains the standard of architecture and quality of place established by the Blyth Workspace building”.

Peter McIntyre, Arch Group Managing Director, said “Part of Arch’s job is to give a lead in delivering housing differently from the wider market, in part to encourage innovation in that market. These thoroughly modern but in some ways very traditional homes will do that. I look forward to seeing what local people make of the plans – constructive feedback is always welcome. “We will also be delivering this project in a unique type of partnership with the private sector and I look forward to Arch being able to set out more details of that in the coming weeks.”
