Brightening the future for Ellington

HOUSE BUILDER ASCENT HOMES HAS COMMENCED WORK ON THE SITE OF THE FORMER ELLINGTON VILLAGE COLLIERY. PHASE ONE WAS GRANTED PLANNING APPROVAL IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR FOR 99 PROPERTIES ON THE FORMER NORTHUMBERLAND VILLAGE COLLIERY SITE AND ASCENT HOMES HAS ALSO EXCHANGED CONTRACTS ON THE PHASE TWO LAND FOR AN ADDITIONAL 85 PROPERTIES TO BE BUILT ON THE SITE.

The award-winning property has started work on the first run of the project, set to regenerate part of the former Ellington Colliery site into family houses and bungalows. Ascent acquired the site from Harworth Estates last year, and this will be the first new housing estate of this scale in Ellington for many years.

Phase one comprises 14 two-bed apartments, four two-bed bungalows, 15 two-bed houses, 30 three-bed townhouses, 18 three-bed detached houses and 18 four-bed detached houses. It also includes 14 affordable homes which will be prioritised for local residents. There are a further 85 properties proposed on phase two which are also a range of bungalows and two, three and four-bed properties. Proposals are also in the pipeline to provide a retail unit on the site.

Ellington village was the site of the last remaining operational deep coal mine in North East England and has been vacant since it was closed by UK Coal in 2005. The project is expected to employ up to 140 people in construction, providing new job or apprenticeship opportunities for local people and contracts for local suppliers. Once occupied, the homes will bring an estimated £1.8m per year of spend into the area.

The development will also generate around £180,000 a year of extra income to Northumberland County Council through Council Tax and ‘New Homes Bonus’, helping to underpin vital public services.

Duncan Bowman, Ascent Homes Development Director said: “This site is a fantastic addition to our growing portfolio of developments. Our aim is to offer an additional high-quality range of family houses and bungalows, adding a new dimension to the Northumberland housing market. We are working hard to develop the highest quality specifications for this historic Northumberland site.”
